August 28, 2024 Structure Fire

On Wednesday, August 28th at 14:18 the Esopus Fire Department with an
automatic response from the Port Ewen Fire Department were dispatched to a
report of smoke coming from the rear of a residence at 86 Ulster Avenue. The
first arriving unit was on scene within 4 minutes reporting a light smoke coming
from a window. Within minutes heavy smoke and fire was showing from the
window and a 2nd alarm was transmitted. Firefighters made entry, located the
fire, and initiated an aggressive interior attack. The bulk of the fire was
contained to the room of origin and an adjoining room, with smoke damage
throughout the building. One cat was treated with oxygen from our pet oxygen
mask and another was found deceased. All units were clear of the scene in just
under 3 hours. The fire is currently under investigation.

While operating at the fire scene, firefighters also responded to a boat in
distress on the Hudson River in the area of the Esopus Lighthouse. Both
occupants were safely transported from the disabled vessel to the shore without
incident.
