On Thursday, August 17th at 08:26 the Esopus Fire Department and Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle accident with entrapment in the area of 764 Route 9W. The first arriving unit was on the scene within four minutes and reported a three car MVA, all three vehicles off the roadway with one patient still in a vehicle. Due to the entrapment a 2nd alarm was requested for manpower as well an ALS unit to respond. Firefighters were able to extricate the entrapped patient from the vehicle in nine minutes using Hurst tools commonly referred to as the Jaws of Life. One patient was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, one patient to Vassar Brothers Hospital, both in Poughkeepsie by Esopus Ambulance/Empress EMS, two patients refused transport. Route 9W was closed for approximately one hour.
Esopus Firefighters were assisted by the Port Ewen Fire Department, the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Empress EMS, Ulster County Department of Emergency Services, the New York State Police, and the Ulster County Sherriff’s Office.
