On Sunday, February 10th at 04:40 the Esopus Fire Department and Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad were dispatched to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident with injuries in the area of 617 Route 9W. The first arriving unit was on the scene within minutes and found a motor vehicle accident involving two cars that struck head-on with both drivers heavily entrapped and serious injuries. Two medical helicopters and additional heavy rescue was requested from the Port Ewen Fire Dept. Firefighters deployed extrication tools often referred to as the “Jaws of Life” and were able to free both entrapped patients within forty minutes. Both patients were transported by Esopus Ambulance to a landing zone and transferred to a medevac helicopter for transport to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Route 9W remained closed for approximately three hours.
Esopus Firefighters were assisted by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Highland Hose Company, Port Ewen Fire Dept, St. Remy Fire Dept, Mobile Life Support, Ulster County Emergency Services, NYS DOT, Ulster County Sherriff’s Office and the New York State Police.
