January 17th, 2025 Ice Rescue

On Friday, January 17th at 11:32am the Esopus Fire Department and Esopus Ambulance were alerted to the report of a dog stuck on the ice in the Hudson River near the Black Creek Preserve off Winding Brook Rd. A local resident was hiking with three dogs on the Blue Trail when “Maya” got away
and ended up on ice in the river. Upon arrival responders found the dog in the Hudson River. Responders used their rescue training and equipment to safely remove the dog from the river within 19 minutes of the call for help. The Dive Team from Ulster Hose Co. #5 was requested to scene but was cancelled after the dog was removed. Maya was reunited with her family and evaluated by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance on scene before returning home.

Esopus Firefighters were assisted by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad and the New York State Police.

While operating at this incident, Esopus Firefighters also responded to a Carbon Monoxide Incident on Fawn Meadows Court. Firefighters found levels of CO in the residence, shut down the heating system and ventilated the house. This incident was handled by the Esopus Fire Department, Port Ewen Fire Department and the Town of Esopus Ambulance Squad.
